The brief tenure of Pr Ahmed bin Abdelaziz as Minister of Interior has come to an end, Saudi Gazette reports. Pr Ahmed took up the role in June of this year upon the death of Pr Naif, but requested to step down. He is being replaced by Pr Muhammad bin Naif, son of the former Interior Minister.

Pr Ahmed’s name frequently came up in discussions about Saudi succession. His resignation now will call for a re-evaluation of his prospects as a contender for the throne.

Muhammad Bin Naif named interior minister

JEDDAH – King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, issued a Royal Order Monday relieving Prince Ahmad Bin Abdul Aziz from his post as Minister of Interior upon his request and appointing Prince Muhammad Bin Naif Bin Abdul Aziz as Minister of Interior.

The Royal Order instructed the authorities concerned to carry out the order with immediate effect.

The decision is based on a letter dated Nov. 5, 2012 (20/12/1433H) sent by Prince Ahmad requesting that he be relieved from his post.

Prince Muhammad has been Deputy Interior Minister responsible for security for many years. He has been spearheading the efforts to crush Al-Qaeda in the Kingdom.

Ahmed was the main rival to Khalid bin Faisal, Governor of Mecca. This would appear to put Khalid in a solid lead to get in line for the succession, although this will probably not happen anytime soon officially, and, of course, the winds could shift again in the future prior to such an official decision.
