Bad news for Hamza Kashghari. And shame on the craven government of Malaysia. That government has extradited Kashghari back to Saudi Arabia on the latter’s request.

Extradition takes place when a government sends a person back to another country under that second country’s declaration of him as a criminal. That requires that whatever the person did also be a crime in the country from which he is to be sent back. Thus, Malaysia’s having a law that criminalizes blasphemy is a prerequisite for its extraditing of him. As facts have it, Malaysia does have such a law. Kashghari made a serious mistake in choosing to go to Malaysia. Had he picked, for example, the Philippines or Thailand, he would likely have been unextraditable.

Now, he will be returned his home country, where a raging froth of public anger will make it all too easy for a court to find him guilty and impose the harshest of sentences.

Malaysia deports Saudi journalist Hamza Kashgari

Malaysian authorities have deported a Saudi journalist accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a tweet.

Police confirmed to the BBC that Hamza Kashgari was sent back to Saudi Arabia on Sunday despite protests from human rights groups.

Mr Kashgari’s controversial tweet last week sparked more than 30,000 responses and several death threats.

Insulting the prophet is considered blasphemous in Islam and is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

Mr Kashgari, 23, fled Saudi Arabia last week and was detained upon his arrival in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

He had tweeted his doubts about Muhammad on the prophet’s birthday last week. Saudi clerics condemned his remarks as blasphemous.

    I have a confession, I was on Penang Island at a hotel at the furthest end of an island and whilst I was sleeping someone/ thing must have slashed my finger I think with a sharp piece of glass. I’m not joking. I don’t like that place and will never return. I swear the plane ride back there was the worst ride i ever had on a plane.

    Hamza is the savior of the Saudi government. This is exactly what the government needs to distract people from issues that really matter. I’ve never seen such a fast Saudi government response to an issue before; it’s almost as if they were waiting for something like this to happen. If they play their cards right, they could drag this in the courts for months and by guaranteeing front page coverage, make this and not issues of unemployment, greater rights the issue of 2012. Well played Saudi government. Well played.

    I had to memorize the preamble of the U.S. constitution in High School. When I read the “We” I always felt I was included in the “We”. I would hope most Americans, atheists, Muslim etc., would feel the same way.
