I’m currently traveling up the east coast of the US to Washington, DC for the holidays. I won’t be posting while driving. I’ll likely not post while recovering from a thousand miles of road noise and vibration, either, so check back on Wednesday Thursday for new material.

Travel safely – we’re still digging ourselves out of the snowpocalypse here in DC!

Enjoy with your family and friends! I will be travelling on Thursday till Sunday, so let’s see how much internet access I get during that time. I hope I don’t miss the fun on your site while I’m away.

Have a nice holiday, it looks like we in Denmark will have a white christmas, the first one in more than ten years.
If you have spare time though, then there is the new UNDP/Arab League report on poverty,

Enjoy your holiday, John; now I’ve been surprised by your post (about noise and vibration); I imagined the American roads and cars were better than that…
December:22:2009 - 18:16
The cars and roads are fine enough… it’s just that there’s a lot of road! Today’s trip was 1,000 miles (1,600km) in just over 15 hours. I started off at 10pm and arrived at 1pm today.
The roads were clear and dry the whole distance, except for inside Washington. The traffic was very good until within 100 miles of Washington. There, it was heavy traffic and accidents slowing things down.

Perhaps when you make the return trip you can stop by Charlotte and say Hello!
Happy holidays,
Carol

That’s quite fast John, driving 1600 kms in just 15 hrs! Have a nice time at home. I sent you the list with some suggestions. Please check your mail when you have more time.
December:23:2009 - 10:45
Carol,
Thanks, and same to you! E-mail me your coordinates and let’s see if it’s possible. My driving tends to be intense, stopping only for fuel–the car’s and mine–but I at least like to think of myself as adaptable!
December:23:2009 - 10:47
It’s all within 10% of the speed limits, but I really do just drive. The easiest parts are at night–fewer vehicles contending for space, generally better drivers on the road, no rush hour traffic to contend with.
December:23:2009 - 11:32
I wish it was like that in India – drivers tend to go very fast at night, often drivers for trucks an buses are drunk so most accidents on the highways take place in the night.
You have a lot of stamina to drive for 15 hrs continuously!
December:23:2009 - 16:27
Driving in India at night is extremely scary! Even in the cities, it’s not a lot of fun. Between cities, it’s the stuff of horror films.
I do stop every few hours for refueling, and halfway through take a two-hour nap. But it’s always a pleasure to get to the end of the road.
December:23:2009 - 19:39
You are so correct about driving in India at night. I always feared I would hit one of the cows which loved sleeping in the roads at night!
December:23:2009 - 21:48
John,
I’m glad to know you stopped every few hours and also rested for sometime.
Carol,
Yes, cows, goats, donkeys, cats and dogs are part of the Indian roads’ night show. My worst experience of travelling by road in the night was when I was going to Simla – travelling up the mountains to 7000 ft in midnight – all alone in a taxi. My taxi was hit by a drunken driver and my driver decided to chase him on the narrow mountain road down the steep slopes curving at sharp bends with no railings on the sides and the valley lying thousands of feet below. That night I felt very close to death and if I sometimes I pray, I do so only because I have survived such experiences in my life! Later, everyone warned me not to travel alone at midnight up the hills. So, no more travelling to Simla in a taxi in the midnight hour for me.
But nothing more scary than driving in Delhi with its mad traffic – during the day or night.

@16 Daisy
That’s pretty narrow resolution! It shouldn’t be hard to uphold. LOL.

Sparky–Agreed! or from your mouth to God’s ears. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, and I’m giving it 24hrs for a decent showing, and 40 for a just under the wire manifestation:
