An interesting webpage which has suddenly burst upon the blogosphere: Marine Traffic uses current online mapping programs to track international shipping. I suggest you play around with it to get an idea of just how busy some ports—as the Gulf oil ports—are on any given day.

The mapping is not complete, however. For instance, there’s no data on the Port of Jeddah, presumably because someone is not making that data available. Still, it’s probably worth a look.

    Very interesting indeed; as you say, John, it’s not complete, some areas are surprisingly empty; yet that’s a nice tool for Somalian pirates….
