How can you tell when a reform is actually a reform? When Al-Qaeda condemns it!

Agence France Presse reports that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is condemning the co-educational nature of King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST). Al-Qaeda stands in shock and horror that women might actually be in the same room with unrelated males. While doing so, they also call the Saudi government ‘apostate’.

Qaeda blasts Saudi king over mixed university: SITE

RIYADH (AFP) — The Yemen-based branch of Al-Qaeda has accused Saudi King Abdullah of violating Islam by launching the kingdom’s first public university where men and women can mix, SITE Intelligence reported.

Ibrahim al-Rubaish, a Saudi member of Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), said in an audio message posted on the internet that the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, where post-graduate science students and researchers will work together, violated Islamic shariah law.

“The father of the daughter or the brother of the sister or the husband of the wife, how can they accept that these (women enroll) in this university, this university that violated Sharia, violating even the system that this government claims to apply?” Rubaish said, according to a transcript issued late on Tuesday by SITE, a US-based monitoring group.

More kudos for KAUST–an Al-Qaeda condemnation can be high praise indeed! Hopefully none of the idiots Sandy so aptly described takes upon him/her self to teach anyone at KAUST or connected with it a lesson. I’m sure the Saudi government foresaw this.

John, the picture annexed to the article seems to confirm what a collegue of mine told me, that women are not obliged to wear the hijab in KAUST; is that true ?

Yes, that’s true. ‘Modest clothing’ is the only requirement and that is essentially defined by the wearer. Now if someone showed up for class in a string bikini, there might be an issue…
