The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) runs a selection of anti-terrorism political cartoons appearing in recent Saudi publications. Helpfully, the page includes translations, as well as citations. I find it interesting that the political cartoonists use the term ‘War on Terror’ (al harb ‘ala al irhab) though that phrase has been banished from the official US government vocabulary!

Fatwas containing accusations of heresy cover the terrorist’s eyes and block his ears

notice, unlike western media, terrorists are depicted without a beard to minimize the link between piety and terrorism.

Well, the link between beards and piety is strange enough, but that’s clearly not exclusive to Islam.

Some of the cartoons are clever. This one at the top of the post makes no sense to me. Oh well.

So, why the sudden push (August & Sept 2009) to marginalize the extremists? I didn’t see anything like this in October 2001. I guess after Pr. Nayef almost got it by the butt-bomb in late August, the royals have decided to step up their psy-ops campaign.

I rather liked the one I posted, naturally enough! :-) It’s suggesting that there are so many fatwas flying around that people are blinded and deafened to the reality of terrorism.

Just to clarify, it wasn’t Pr. Nayef who was the target; it was his son, who’s responsible for the rehab program, among other things.

But yes, these would have been very welcomed back in 2001.

Rather dashing, Yeah that’s right, they don’t have any beards!
Makes it more difficult to recognise them as terrorists

I like the one where the terrorist is ushered into hell!

I’ve always wanted a heresy or blasphemy fatwa to frame. They ought to sell them on Ebay.

however, you won’t see a cartoon showing the al-saud dictatorship labeling as a terrorist someone using islam for more rights or outright showing the dictatorship is against islam.
