The Saudi Society for Defending Women’s Rights in Saudi Arabia is claiming that the honor killing of two girls (earlier) that led to their homicidal brother’s being taken to court is actually the fault of the religious police, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The groups says that if the religious police hadn’t made such a big deal of the girls’ behavior in the first place, their brother wouldn’t have gotten so wound up. Interesting way of looking at it.

I’m sure that the society’s complaint will be ignored. It’s not just the religious police, but the society that permits that kind of maximalist restriction on their individual lives that would have to acknowledge fault. And then change. It’s not only possible that this could happen, but necessary. But it’s not going to be happening any time soon.

Saudi religious police blamed in ‘honour’ killing of sisters

RIYADH (AFP) — A Saudi women’s group on Friday blamed the country’s religious police in the “honour” killing of two sisters shot dead by their own brother after they were arrested for mixing with unrelated men.

The Society for Defending Women’s Rights in Saudi Arabia said the religious police had placed the sisters’ lives in danger when they arrested them and then placed them in a Riyadh women’s shelter.

The two women, identified as Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19, were murdered after they left the shelter on July 5.

The brother shot them in the presence of their father who, according to newspaper reports, quickly forgave the son for defending the family’s honour.

But the society blamed the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or the religious police, for sparking the brother’s anger over his family’s honour by arresting the girls in the first place.

That family sounds less than honorable. The father and brother sound like meager human beings with eggshell, murderous egos. I wish Saudis could call a rose a rose and publicly admonish this primitive, cave-dweller mentality with real conviction, real reform against these sad men. Of course, this will be forgotten in a matter of weeks if not days and the devil’s honor that infects the minds of weak men will win another round.
