Arab News reports that the first Board of Trustees to administer the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) has been named:

King names KAUST board of trustees

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday issued a royal decree naming the chairman and members of the first board of trustees of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal outside Jeddah.

Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Ali Al-Naimi is the chairman of the board, whose members include three sons of King Abdullah — Prince Khaled, Prince Abdul Aziz and Prince Mansour.

The 20-member board also includes Ahmed Muhammad Ali, Khaled Al-Sultan, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Khaled Al-Faleh, Lubna Al-Olayan, Mohammed Jameel, Choon Fong Shih, Frank Rhodes, Tony Tan King Yan, Mary Robinson, Shirley Tilghman, Elias Zerhouni, Jang Jee, John Brennan, Andrew Gold and Rolf Dieter Heur.

    If KAUST wants to become a genuine educational leader in the Middle East it should consider organizing itself into a system of residential colleges, as can be found at many of the best universities in the world. (And at rising universities in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, and elsewhere.) Shirley Tilghman could point the way for them, as could other people. I only hope they aim high and don’t adopt to quickly some of the less distinguished features of American higher education.

    I haven’t heard of all these folks, but at least some are heavyweight people who have a reputation for getting things done, or at least managing others who do.

    I’m surprised Frank Press didn’t make the cut. What is Robinson supposed to do, I wonder? And I thought Shih was going to stay President – is it proper that he is on the Board as well?
