There’s a strange report over at the Aafaq website about an attempted coup’s being thwarted in Saudi Arabia at this link (Arabic site).

I don’t find Aafaq to be particularly accurate in its reports, so I’m not quite ready to buy into this one. I’ll wait for other sources to report the same, but this story is out there.

I’ve seen no other reports than this (and a couple of Arab blogs that translated the report into English). An example:

Failed Military Coup in Saudi Arabia

Saudi security source told Aafaq newssite that Saudi military officers and member s of the National Guards tried to thwart a military coup to overthrow army officers loyal to the current Saudi king Abdullah.

The source said that Major Ahmed Maiad Zahrani, a National Guard officer in the Riyadh backed by a Saudi prince in the royal family has recruited approximately 150 officers of National Guards, arrested later for further questioning and charged with conspiracy.

The plan was to overthrow the Saudi National Guards leader, who is loyal to king Abdullah and to prevent the selection of other member of the family as crown prince after the death of recent crown prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz [who is seriously sick].

I don’t know about this Aafaq source. As Saudis, we surley would have heard about it in the “street” way before this non-saudi source. Strange.

I believe it! or at least could believe it. Some of those princes are such money hungry vampires…they wouldn’t let anything or anyone stand in their way from getting more of what they want and that is greed and power.

HOwever I doubt 150 of anything is enough for a coup…

I hope my skepticism came through in my post. I don’t believe this story without verification from other sources. I’ve yet to find any other sources.

    I don’t believe it.

Well…I work at National Guard and see no validity in this report. Although interesting it does at least quote an alledged National Guard officer by name…but still, too vague. However it is known that a lot of news is buried as it is not deemed suitable for public consumption. But again, I reiterate that I do not believe the Aafaq article.

Saudi usually has a policy of not providing information about such activities. So it is not easy to know if the story is right or wrong. Keeping the rumors under wraps from families and tribes for such a large number of people is almost impossible. The story seems inaccurate.
