While it appears to have been a mistake when The Independent reported that permission had been given for Saudi women to drive in the Kingdom, Saudi women do drive when outside the Kingdom. And sometimes, they have accidents, as this story from Arab News relates. I suspect the story will be seized upon by those who don’t want women driving.

Saudi Woman Driver in Egypt Accident Waits for Court Hearing
Samir Al-Saadi, Arab News

JEDDAH, 27 January 2008 — An Egyptian court postponed yesterday a hearing involving a Saudi woman driver who struck a taxi resulting in the death of two people, the lawyer representing the woman told Arab News yesterday. The hearing was rescheduled because the plaintiffs in the case failed to submit relevant documents in time.

The plaintiffs requested two additional weeks to submit the paper work, but the defendant’s lawyer, Mustaf Al-Ashgar, expressed concern that the hearing would be delayed again. The court responded to this concern by extending the deadline to Feb. 23.

Biggest question I have: Where did she obtain her license assuming she had one? Like I have said before I have heard of Saudi women being handed out international driver’s licenses in Saudi Arabia like hotcakes without ever having to prove they can drive. They obtain them so they can go into other countries and driver.

So much for the protection of men over their women. “Here is a license…a gift from me to you! Go and kill yourself and people in other countries.”

    * I am not saying this true for the woman in this story because it doesn’t state anything about her license.

Sparky,This story was covered in the Egyptian press extensively with lots of Saudi bashing and lies. Including that she was a princess, was drunk, Saudi government bribing officials to get her free, etc.

The fact is the girl has a Saudi dad and an Egyptian mother. She went to grade school and college in Egypt. So she was more Egyptian than Saudi in upbringing and probably learned driving like many affluent Egyptian girls as she grew up. She probably got a license through normal rout.
