Saudi businesswomen centre to sponsor forum
Habib SheikhJEDDAH — The two-day women’s forum, which is to be held under the patronage of Princess Adelah bint Abdullah in Jeddah on March 19 -20, has many firsts to its credit, according to Dr Basmah Mosleh Omair, executive director of the Sayeda Khadijah bint Khuwailid Centre for Businesswomen at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI). The Princess will present a paper on the Saudi woman 2020.
“The forum is the first one that the centre is sponsoring on this level,” Omair told Khaleej Times in an interview in Jeddah on Tuesday.
She explained that what is new about the forum is the issues, which are not just from the economic point of view. There are a lot of social traditions and things embedded in the society that are hindering the progress of women that will be discussed. “The theme of the conference is ‘The Reality of Women’s Participation in National Development.’ As such social values, education, religion, her role and participation, have to be addressed,” she said.
Khaleej Times from Dubai carries this piece on an effort being made to open more doors for Saudi women as entrepreneurs. Interesting reading.

I’ve personally met many Saudi women who desire to enter the work force and/or become independent business women. Unfortunately a number of them still need to learn that they cannot simply start at the top or be hired immediately as an executive without requisite training, skills and experience. I hope this will be one of the issues and realities broached at the conference.
