Jeddah Hosting First Saudi Arabian Film Festival From Today
Ebtihal Mubarak, Arab NewsJEDDAH, 12 July 2006 — The Jeddah Visual Shows Festival, which begins today at 7 p.m. at the Jeddah Science and Technology Center on the Corniche, may mislead visitors. It sounds like a science exhibition, but it’s not. It’s Saudi Arabia’s first movie festival.
Arab News reports on this, the first public film festival in Saudi Arabia. Of particular interest is that audiences will be both male and female—and not, apparently—in separate sessions.
The festival is taking place in Jeddah. This city is the most “forward” of Saudi cities, with a long history of social interactions involving numerous cultures and their values. If this and succeeding film festivals go well, with no notorious outrages against women, then we might see others taking part in other cities over the coming years. But it’s certainly a step toward liberalization in Saudi society.
