US Muslims Issue Fatwa Against Terrorism
Barbara Ferguson, Arab News

WASHINGTON, 29 July 2005 — American Muslim religious scholars who interpret religious law for their community issued a formal ruling yesterday condemning terrorism and forbidding Muslims to cooperate with anyone involved in a terrorist act.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a news conference yesterday in Washington, D.C., to announce that a fatwa against terrorism and extremism had been issued by the 18-member Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) and endorsed by major US Muslim groups.

Arab News‘ coverage of the fatwa is straight-up reporting at this point. I anticipate editorial comment tomorrow, after people have a chance to talk it over to see just what they do think of it.

Any formal statement, and in this case an actual fatwa, is a major step towards not accepting extremism.

The fact that Islamic organizations in the U.S. are asking the Imams to speak in the “salat al Jumaah” or Friday prayer in their “khutbahs” or sermons on these atrocities shows a sincere effort to speak out against terrorism.

I have to ask now, how many Masjids in the Arab World are sincerely trying to implement these topics in the Friday sermon. I don’t know the actual numbers, so I’m curious. The message of any sermon in any religion should be one of peace.
